The fine weather continues and so does the cricket !

Hello and welcome to the latest update from the official blog of Goldsithney Cricket Club.  We have been very lucky with the weather this season meaning almost all of our allocated fixtures have been fulfilled. The last month has once again thrown up some real highs and some equally disappointing lows but such is the nature of the game we all love that all sorts of emotions will be experienced over the course of a season. As always, we hope you enjoy the blog.

Saturday 6th July 2013
Goldsithney 1st 11 v St. Just 3rd 11
Toss: St. Just won the toss and elected to bowl.
Goldsithney 153 beat St. Just 116 by 37 runs.

Having recently faced each other in the reverse fixture, both sides arrived at the ground fully aware that a hard fought game of cricket was on the cards. Having won the toss and electing to bowl first on  a wicket offering assistance for the bowlers, the St. Just openers backed up their captains decision to bowl with some excellent tight bowling before striking early twice to remove Giles Lawrence and the Francis Pellow to leave the home side in trouble at 10 for 2. Treve Kitchen and Albert Pellow then combined to form a patient and determined partnership taking the score to 65 before Albert was dismissed for 25, providing the visitors with a much needed wicket. Harry Wykes quickly followed and another partnership was needed and again Treve Kitchen was the key combining with Matt Lawrence to take the score to 103 before being dismissed for a crucial 43. Wickets continued to steadily fall and apart from an excellent 39 from Matt, no one else managed to get into double figures the innings eventually ending three balls short with the score on 153 a competitive total.
When Goldsithney took the field the bowlers were required to begin with good intensity with early wickets a big priority. This was soon to be provided through opening bowlers Matt Lawrence and George Wykes combining to reduce the visitors to 15-3. There were still some huge wickets left to be taken however  so when Giles Lawrence removed Jim McKenna during a hostile, fast spell of bowling to leave visitors to 56-5 it sparked massive celebrations. There were dangerous batsmen left in the hutch however and some big hitting took the score to 84 before the next wicket Giles again providing the breakthrough. After that wickets fell quickly and our guests were eventually dismissed for 116 a special mention to Jack Ralph for taking a key wicket and to Will Hood who, despite the questioning of a certain left arm bowler, as he shaped to shy at the stumps provided the answer with  shattering of the stumps leaving the batsman stranded. Bowling figures Matt Lawrence 3-17, Giles Lawrence 3-34, George Wykes 1-18 and Jack Ralph 1-44.
Goldsithney 18 points St. Just 7 points.

Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game.

"A great weekend for cricket lovers and Goldsithney 1st XI.
Match report Saturday 6th July
Playing against St Just 3.
St Just won the toss and elected to field, two early wickets put us on the back foot but Treve Kitchen and Albert worked together to build the score up Treve Kitchen scoring 43 and Albert 25 was also aided by some good batting from Matt Lawrence 39 helped Goldsithney get up to 153. Some great bowling from all four boys Matt Lawrence 3-17, George Wykes1-18, Jack Grapes Ralph 1-44 and Giles Lawrence3-34 along with two run outs especially the one by Will Hood had St Just bowled out for 116.
Goldsithney won by 37 runs".

There was no fixture for the second 11 this weekend.

Sunday 7th July
Falmouth 3rd 11 v Goldsithney 1st 11
Toss: Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.
Goldsithney 270-6 beat Falmouth 140 by 130 runs.

The baking hot weather continued the following day completing a draining double header in soaring temperatures. Having won the toss and elected to bat, conditions looked good for batting however the new ball caused problems and as a result of good bowling, we quickly lost both openers to leave us struggling on 8- 2.  Our reply was superb contributions from Francis Pellow 21, Giles Lawrence 20, Saurabh Sarker 37, Will Hood 32 n.o and Alex Ralph 12 n.o all helped to recover a precarious situation. It was Matt Lawrence however with a sparkling innings of a 120 including 15 4s and 4 6s that provided the score which was destined to wrestle the momentum irreversibly back the visitors way a high class innings from a high class talent.
In reply it was once again to be Matt Lawrence leading the way with two quick wickets stifling any hopes the home side had of chasing down the total and when George Wykes removed the third wicket soon after with the score on just 22, the game was already up for the home side.  Through stubborn resitance Falmouth battled hard however to get themselves to 140 all out. Giles Lawrence
provided the standout figures of 5-31 with other wicket takers being Matt Lawrence 2-11, Sid Lawrence 1-11, George Wykes 1-18 and Jack Ralph 1-28.  A good winr Goldsithney to complete a challenging weekend resulting in back to back wins for the first eleven.

Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game.
Playing at Falmouth against the 3rds but was able to play on the main ground, with a very fancy score board.
Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.
Not to give the score away to early but think I have to mention first the superb batting shown by Matt Lawrence on Sunday, Matt Lawrence scored 130 of 136 balls including 15 4's and 4 6's.
But it didnt start that great Goldsithney losing two early wickets Matt Lawrence 130 batted great with the other men and boys to get us to a total of 270-6, Saurabh Sarkar 37, Will 32 no, Francis 21, Giles Lawrence 20 and Alex Ralph 12 no....
Bowling Falmouth out for 140, after batting all day Matt Lawrence then bowled getting two wickets in his second over it looked like it was going to be Matt Lawrence day, but feeling tired he let someone else have a turn and that was mainly Giles Lawrence 5-31, George Wykes, Jack and Sid had a wicket each.
Goldsithney won by 130 runs
Goldsithney 20points
Falmouth 6points.

Saturday 13th July
Goldsithney 1st 11 v Penzance 2nd 11
Toss: Goldsithney elected to bat.
Penzance 139-4 beat Goldsithney 135 by 6 wickets.
Goldsithney 5 points Penzance 20 points

Looking to back up a successful double header the previous weekend, Goldsithney welcomed stern opposition in the form of Penzance to Tregurtha View.  Having won the toss and elected to bat, things began poorly loosing for the home side loosing opener Treve Kitchen in the first over suffering some poor luck with a strangled catch down the leg side. The ship had been steadied to a point with Giles and Albert adding a 57 run partnership for the second wicket. When Giles departed for a well played 43, things unfortunately began to unravel which including loosing our final five wickets for just 10 runs. This left Goldsithney with a disappointing total of 135 all out when at stages in the innings a much higher total looked a real possibility. Top Scorers where Giles Lawrence 43, Matt Lawrence 31, Francis Pellow 27 and Harry Wykes 11.
With the ball in hand the Lawrence brothers combined with an early wicket each leaving the visitors 10-2 to give us a glimmer of hope. It was not to be however with solid partnerships forming to stabilise the innings and then take control of the game, to see the away side home by 6 wickets.
Giles Lawrence 3-27 and Matt Lawrence 1-28 were the wicket takers in a poor performance which left us all bitterly disappointed with our performance knowing we are capable of far better things and will need to improve greatly in the next fixture.

No second 11 game this weekend.
That's it for this weekend hope you enjoyed it keep an eye out for the double header concluding part of the season coming soon and in the meantime, how about having a crack at the pub quiz every Sunday at half 8 in the Trevelyan Arms ? Untill next time goodbye

The season continues

Hello and welcome to the latest blog from Goldsithney Cricket Club. There has certainly been a lot going on and off the field of play over the last month or so with some very good results and also the odd very bad one ! Off the field has also been eventful with a wedding, a farewell bringing mixed emotions for everyone concerned with the club.

Saturday 8th June Godsithney 1st 11 v Ludgvan 2nd 11.

Toss: Goldsithney won the toss and decided to bowl.

Ludgvan 234-7 beat Goldsithney 80 by 154 runs.

Points : Ludgvan 20 points Goldsithney 5 points.

As the above details suggest "derby day" did not go as we wanted and hoped it would for us. Having won the toss we elected to bowl with the hope of taking early wickets and restricting Ludgvan to a chase able target. It was not to be however, and despite the visitors at one stage being 43-2 an excellent innings from Jon Oulds who top scored with 72 held the innings together while others accelerated the run rate around him as Ludgvan completed their 48 overs on 234-7 this combined with the high temperatures on the hottest day of the year made for a long afternoon in the field. Wicket takers were George Wykes 3-61, Sid Lawrence 2-56 and Giles Lawrence 2-52.

In reply despite positive intentions things quickly unravelled irreversibly for us. This was mainly thanks to an excellent spell from Terry Share returning to haunt his old club with unrelenting accuracy, pace and bounce proving to be too much of a handful rewarding him with outstanding figures 8-2-25-6. Only three batsmen made it into double figures for us Harry Wykes top scoring with 29, Francis Pellow 16 and Sid Lawrence 12 made the only other scores of any note.

Definitely not our day and one to be quickly forgotten and moved on from having been in good form previously to this game it was important to bounce back quickly and look forward to the next game away at Truro.

Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game

"Well what can I put it was safe to say not the best performance by Goldsithney 1st XI who played a team that was certainly on a mission to win.

Goldsithney won the toss and elected to field and the bowlers on a very hot day did well and all though Ludgvan scored 234-7 their total could have been a lot higher. Bowling figures were George Wykes 3-61, Giles Lawrence 2-52 and Sid 2-56. Must mention Jack Grapes Ralph and Matt Lawrence who didn't get a wicket but bowled really well against a good team.

Goldsithney went out positively to score the runs but it just wasn't our day bowled out for 80 with Harry Wykes scoring 29, Terry Share took 6-25.

Ludgvan 20 points

Goldsithney 5 points".

Saturday 8th June

Redruth 4th 11 v Goldsithney 2nd 11

Toss: Redruth won the toss and elected to bat.

Goldsithney 190-7 beat Redruth 189-4 by three wickets.

Points: Goldsithney 17 points Redruth  7 points.

The second eleven ensured there would be some good news for the club this weekend, with an outstanding run chase away at Redruth.  A special mention who played a brilliant innings of 116 not out and well supported by the rest of the team the side completed the victory target with seven delivery’s to spare. Credit must also go to the bowlers for restricting a dangerous batting side to a chase able target Ryan Edwards returning the best figures of 3-57.

Skipper Steve Nicholson had this to say

"Redruth won the toss and elected to bat first and a big score seemed likely as their openers put on 152 before we took a wicket( P Boland 103;G Boland 39)On the hottest day of the season so far we stuck to our task and prevented them gaining max. batting points as they completed their 40 overs on189-4.Ryan E(3-51);Colin P(1-58);Bryan P(0-37)and Steve N(0-34)were our bowlers. Our cause was not helped by, at times, some sloppy fielding, conceding 20 extras and what we thought were some dubious not out LBW decisions

We thought the total "gettable" on a small pitch with short boundaries and after a slow but steady start with Steve P rather unfortunately given out "hit wicket” the match was turned around by a magnificent 116 not out by Bryan P scored in just 72 balls with aggressive hitting to all parts of the boundary ably assisted with good running between the wickets by Jack T,Colin P and Alex R. We passed their total in 38.4 overs gaining 17 match points

A good performance from us with great team spirit

Our next match is not until Sat 6 July when we are away to Paul3 starting at 2pm,this unusual break is caused by a bye; a pre-planned cancellation and Constantine2 withdrawing from the league"

This certainly represents a superb effort from the lads who go into their next fixture with confidence.

Saturday 15th June

Truro 3rds V Goldsithney 1st 11

Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.

Goldsithney 121 beat Truro 119-9 by two runs.

Points: Goldsithney 17 points Truro 7 points.

Few would ever of imagined as both sides arrived at the ground that surely one of the most nerve wracking games of the season was about to be played out. Goldsithney having won the toss elected to bat and began brightly scoring at a good tempo with Giles Lawrence making a quick fire 53 of just 51 balls hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and looking in excellent form he was well supported through this period by opening partner Treve Kitchen. When Giles was dismissed with the score on 64 however the true difficulty of the wicket became apparent with scoring becoming an increasingly difficult task as the overs ticked by. A steady flow of wickets accompanied a faltering run rate with Truro's spinner turning the screw. Eventually with only Treve Kitchen 19 and Albert Pellow 17 the only other batsmen to make it into double figures, the innings ended on 121 all out off 38.1 overs Truro's John Dobson 5-7 and  Tom Creagh 5- 38 sharing the wickets between them.

Although disappointed not to have achieved a bigger score, we knew the wicket was difficult to bat on and the target we had set was competitive. So the side took to the field with a steely determination that defeat was not an option and two quick wickets from George Wykes who alongside an outstanding and unlucky opening spell from Matt Lawrence kept scoring opportunities to a premium. Truro progressed slowly and reached 48-2 before Albert Pellow made a needed breakthrough before a stunning piece of fielding resulting in a direct hit by Treve Kitchen left Truro in serious trouble at 48-4 at drinks. The occasional small partnership developed nudging the home side nearer their victory total however wickets also as in the first innings fell regularly as a result of Giles Lawrence, Matt Lawrence and Sid Lawrence. This left the equation with three overs remaining like this : Truro required 20 runs of 18 balls with two wickets in hand. Nerves were frayed and it showed George Wykes conceded two boundaries in his penultimate over and despite the best efforts of Sid, they took five singles of his final over the leave them needing just three of the final over to win.  George Wykes overcame his nerves and kept his calm bowling the final over to deliver a maiden sparking joyous celebrations as we basked in a superb victory against all the odds, a fantastic effort with everyone in the side combing to pull the victory off.

Wicket takers Giles Lawrence 2-24, George Wykes 2-28, Matt Lawrence 1-28 Sid Lawrence 1-9  Albert Pellow 1-12 Darren also deserves to be noted for his efforts which contributed towards the win also.

Here are Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game

"Playing against Truro 3rd XI, Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat. It was all going very well at the start at 24 overs Goldsithney were 100-2, Giles Lawrence scoring 53 before getting out. It then seemed to all go wrong all out for 121, Treve Kitchen 19 and Albert Pellow 17 the only other batsmen getting into double figures. A target of 122 isn't the highest but with the bowling Goldsithney had it could be defended if the team pulled together. 2 quick wickets from George Wykes in his first 2 overs started us on the right path. Truro continued to plod along very slowly scoring 48-4 off 24 overs. The bowling stayed tight and the fielding was on the whole good and we were slowly getting the wickets we needed by the 41st over it was 91-8, the game could have still been anyone's. Truro's number 10 batsmen tried his luck and looked as if he was going to pull it off for Truro scoring 12 off the 46th over leaving them needing 8 to win. Sid Lawrence who will never give up bowled the penultimate over and with some brilliant fielding they scored 5 singles. The last over George Wykes bowling and it was brilliant, pulling out a maiden securing Goldsithney a 2 run win.
A fantastic team effort.
Goldsithney 17 points
Truro 7 points"

Saturday 22nd June

Goldsithney 1s 11 v Chacewater 1st 11

Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.

Goldsithney 133 all out beat Chacewater 121 all out by 12 runs.

Goldsithney 17 points Chacewater 8 points.

Well another game another narrow victory but this only further underlines the fantastic spirit and never say die attitude within the side. After winning the toss and deciding to bat on a day where conditions were poor and it was a fantastic effort to get a completed game at all,  Goldsithney again made a very good start reaching 103-3 Albert Pellow 34, Giles Lawerence 20 and Francis Pellow 29 the main contributors. From here difficult conditions ensured that the remaining wickets fell regularly however resulting in the side being dismissed for 133 Will Hood the only other contributor to make double figures with 11.

Again the spirit of the side became clear for all to see however as again early inroads were made with the Lawrence brothers combining to reduce the visitors to 3-2.  Chacewater responded slowly but surely however and reached 101-2 before the next wicket was to fall.  And when one fell it sparked a collapse led by young spinner Jack Ralph who bowled brilliantly to take 4-17 from just five overs and skipper Sid Lawrence who never gives in claiming 3-31 the visitors were left shell shocked, reduced to 121 all out defeated by 12 runs. This spirit to this side is nothing new last season we won a lot of games in our promotion campaign in matches which could of gone either way proving that at this club we never know when we are beaten!

Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game

"A game that was interrupted by rain all day, I'm surprised we finished but we did with a great win again.
Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat, with poor conditions affected by the weather and not as strong a team as we would have liked, the team did well to score 133 all out, main contributions from Albert 34, Francis 29 and Giles 20.
At tea the rain became worse but eased off a little in time for Goldsithney to take the field, to early wickets one each for Matt Lawrence and Giles Lawrence got us underway and with tight bowling from both was putting Chacewater under pressure and me to sleep lol with only 28 runs off 20 overs.
Chacewater were not giving up and their number 3 and 4 batsmen were starting to gain a bit of momentum reaching one hundred by the 36...th over. Then came on Jack Grapes Ralph who bowled absolutely brilliantly ending with figures off his 5 overs 4-17. A good run out by Giles getting their number 4 out who scored 57 helped secure the win. Sid had 3-31 and will be bowling for a hat-trick the next time he plays.
Again a great team effort and if I could put in a request may be win a bit easier next time lol.
Goldsithney won by 12 runs.
Goldsithney 18 points, Chacewater 8 points
Depending on other results I think that makes us 4th in league table ".

A wedding and a farewell

Mixed emotions for the club off the field have occurred during the last month. Firstly a huge congratulations to Francis and Kerry, who recently married. Everyone at the  club wishes the all the happiness and success possible in the future. Francis has been a loyal player for this club for many years and Kerry who has been an ever present supporting us very rarely missing a game and also helping out with teas and in general a great person to have around the club!

We say farewell to Mike and Trish however who will be missed by many. They have been the owners of the Trevelyan Arms for the past seven years and have always been keen supporters of our side. Mike has been more than just a supporter however the chairman of the club and hugely influential in raising funds and always generous with his time, the club also wishes you both all the best with many thanks, and good luck on your adventures!

Into the semi finals.

A quick note to say we have recently progressed to the semi finals of the cup which will be hosted at Penzance Cricket Club after defeating Halestown on Thursday. Dates for the semi final will be made known as and when the author is aware of them but your support would be a huge boost to us with in being a 20/20 competition, we are a maximum of 80 overs of good cricket away from lifting a trophy now that would be a fantastic achievement.

Quiz nights.

Finally quiz nights continue every Sunday at half past eight in the Trevelyan Arms, it's a fun event and at just a pound to enter a good laugh. Any contributions for prizes will be much appreciated by the club so please donate if you can.

That is it for now, big games for both clubs coming up support us if you can please!!

The climb up the table.

Hello and welcome to the official blog of Goldsithney Cricket Club, these last couple of weeks have in general seen the clubs fortunes improve on the field and off field activities have helped to not only raise funds for the club but also team spirit even higher more on that later, we start where we left off from the last blog with match reports from all recent league fixtures.

Saturday 18th May
Perranporth CC 1st 11 v Goldsithney CC 1st 11.
Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.
Perranporth CC 1st 11 138-4 beat Goldsithney CC 1st 11 137 all out by 6 wickets.
Perranporth CC 1st 11 20 points Goldsithney CC 1st 11 5 points.

A disappointing day for the 1st eleven saw the side defeated by six wickets away at Perranporth. Top scorers for the side were Albert Pellow 29, Francis Pellow 25, Matt Lawrence 17 and Giles Lawrence 15. Having at one stage being 78-2, a bigger total would of been targeted, however in reply with the ball, for a while things looked promising with Perranporth being reduced to 39-3 thanks to Giles Lawrence and Sid Lawrence combining to take three wickets without another run being added to the total. A good partnership took the game away from the side however and by the time of the fourth wicket falling the formalities were almost complete despite the best efforts of Giles Lawrence 3- 21 and Sid Lawrence 1-15.

Saturday 18th May
Goldsithney 2nd 11 v Perranarworthal 3rd 11.
Goldsithney won the toss and decided to bowl.
Goldsithney 67-5 beat Perranarworthal 66 all out by 5 wickets.
Goldsithney 18 points Perranarworthal 3 points.
The second eleven recorded an excellent win over Perranarworthal to give the side their first win of the season and giving a confidence boost to all involved in the process. Stephen Nicholson and Bryan Parmer were to provide the stand out performance with 5- 21 and 41 not out respectively here is second team captain  Stephen Nicholson thoughts on the game.

"Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that looked like it would help the bowlers, this proved to be the case when an all spin bowling attack proved too strong for the visitors batting line up.Steve N took 5-14,Jack R 2-14,Colin P 2-3 and Bryan P 1-28. Perranarworthal were all out for 66 in 31 overs
The decision to bat 10 overs instead of taking an early tea appeared to be the wrong decision when Steve N was out first ball in our innings followed fairly quickly by Colin P,Jack R,Alex R and Dan O all with low scores,we looked in trouble at 20-5 but sensible batting by Bryan P(41 not out)ably assisted by a calm Jack T "steadied the ship"and at 67-5 we won by 5 wkts gaining 18 points
Well done to everyone, this was a much improved performance from our previous game and we should look forward with confidence to the forthcoming Bank Hol fixtures against Perranporth(away)on Sat and Camborne(home)on Mon
Captains note........ Apologies to those who thought it was not the greatest idea to start batting before tea perhaps putting us undue pressure but maybe it shows in sport that managers/captains don't always make the right call!!In my case ...lesson learned!"

Saturday 25th May
Goldsithney 1st 11 v St. Gluvias 2nd 11.
St Gluvias won the toss and elected to bat.
Goldsithney 125-4 beat St. Gluvias 124 all out by 6 wickets.
Goldsithney 20 points St. Gluvias 5 points.

On a warm May afternoon Goldsithney were in the field first having lost the toss and for a while were under pressure against a stubborn St. Gluvias top order who started positively but a concerted and patient bowling effort brought the run rate back down to almost a complete halt at times and with a bit of luck here and there wickets could of tumbled at a quicker rate. The Lawrence brothers Giles and Matt were outstanding finishing with figures of 5- 20 and 4-32 with a combined analysis of 9- 52! George Wykes selfishly chipped in with a  wicket of his own to prevent a Lawrence clean sweep and a remarkable scorecard. Batting was at times nervous loosing Treve Kitchen in the first over but knocks from Giles 37, Francis Pellow 34 and Matt Lawrence 19 not out saw us comfortably home in the end.

1st 11 scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game:

"St Gluvias won the toss and elected to bat, St Gluvias started well but through an excellent bowling display by Giles Lawrence 5 for 20, Matt Lawrence 4 for 32 and George Wykes 1 for 46. Goldsithney bowled St Gluvias out for 124 in 43.2 overs. Now Goldsithney needed the batting to get us through, unfortunately we lost Treve Kitchen in the first over but good batting from Giles Lawrence 37 and Francis Pellow 34 got us off to a quick 50 in 8 overs, Albert Pellow 12 and Matt Lawrence 19no secured the win in 27.2 overs.
Goldsithney won by 6 wkts, claiming 20pts, St Gluvias 5pts".

Perranporth 2nd 11 v Goldsithney 2nd 11
Perranporth won the toss and elected to bat.
Goldsithney 137-5 beat Perranporth 136-3 by 5 wickets.
Goldsitheny 16 points Perranporth 5 points.

Back to back wins for the second eleven completed an outstanding weekend for the club away at Perranporth. Having lost the toss and having to field first, the bowlers found wickets hard to come by but crucially bowled with accuracy and consistency resulting in some economical bowling analysis and Perranporth being restricted to 136- 3 in their 40 overs.
In reply a nervous start was quickly resolved by an excellent 73 run partnership between captain Stephen Nicholson 22 and Bryan Palmer 68 with good support from Jack Ralph 15 not out  seeing the job through. Another win sees the team climb higher up the table and Stephen Nicholson was delighted with the result.
"A good 16 point win for the 2nd's at Perranporth should, hopefully, see us move up the Div 7 table
Perranporth won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared to be a good batting track, tight bowling by the 4 bowlers used(Bryan P,Steve N,Jack R,Colin P) restricted their score to 136-3 and we were perhaps a little unlucky not to take more wickets but lapses in the field probably gave them 20-25 more runs than they deserved
Our reply faltered a little at the start but a fine innings of 63 from Bryan P together with Steve N coming in at number 5(22)saw us edge closer to the score required and it was left to Jack T(batting with Alex R)to hit the winning runs in the 36th over
Overall a good game played on an attractive and well maintained ground in fine weather
Well done boys!
We are at home to Camborne on Bank Hol Monday and home to Beacon on Sat 1st June both start at 2pm"

Monday 27th May

Rain, rain, rain! horrendous weather meant not surprisingly the weather was the winner denying both sides the opportunity to back up good performances with another set of wins.
June 1st
St Just 3rd 11 v Goldsithney 1st 11
St. Just won the toss and elected to bowl.
Goldsithney 213-6 beat St.Just 187 by 25 runs.
Goldsithney 20 points St. Just 7 points.

A hard thought game of cricket saw the lads produce an excellent victory in a game which for a long period of time in St. Just's run chase was tense and threatened to go all the way to the wire. Batting first Goldsithney were off to an electric start thanks to an attacking opening partnership between Giles Lawrence 41 and Treve Kitchen 23 saw an opening stand of 74. St Just battled back well however and began to chip in with regular wickets reducing us to 127-5 which given the start we had was a little disappointing but the wicket was challenging and credit must also go to the oppositions bowlers. A superb counter attacking partnership of 55  by Harry Wykes 37 not out and Matt Lawrence 28, gave the batting momentum again and with a quick fire 13 not out lifted our total too 213-6 off out allotted 48 overs.
Chasing  a large total St.Just started aggressively and runs flowed particularly off an expensive opening burst from George Wykes. With Jim Mckenna at the crease St. Just were always in  with a chance especially after surviving a couple of real scares in his time at the wicket. The bowling in general was exceptional with Giles, Matt and Sid containing the run rate and taking wickets the pressure began to increase on Mckenna. Leg spinner Saurabh Sarkar chipped in with a crucial wicket with Treve Kitchen taking an outstanding catch and when George Wykes returned to bowl a much improved second spell removing Mckenna with Giles this time taking a very difficult catch and then removing the last wicket clean bowled to seal an excellent victory, everyone could finally breath a huge sigh of relief ! Bowling figures Sid Lawrence 3-43 Giles Lawrence 2-32, George Wykes 2-33, Saurabh Sarker 1-26 and Matt Lawrence 1-48.

Scorer Kelly Lawrence's thoughts on the game
"St Just won the toss and elected to field. Openers Giles Lawrence andTreve Kitchen got Goldsithney off to a good start again scoring 50 in 25 minutes off only 42 balls. Goldsithney then lost both Treve Kitchen 23 and Giles Lawrence 41 in the same over and losing Francis 15 early, we soon went from 100 of 20 overs to 125 of 30 overs. Albert 23 steadied the ship, It looked like we would post a score around 180 but Matt Lawrence 28 and Harry Wykes 37 no batted brilliantly to get to a score of 213 for 6.
With only 10 men the bowling and fielding had to be at its best and for most of the game it was. St Just had a player run out in the first over getting us off to a superb start and in the second over should have had Jim McKenna caught for nothing, unfortunately that didn't happen and it proved to be costly he went on to score 121 and was finally caught on the boundary by Giles Lawrence in the 44th over. Only one other put a score of 31 but he and McKenna could not do a teams job on their own.
Goldsithney bowled St Just 3 out 187 Sid 3 for 43, Giles 2 for 32, George 2 for 33, Saurabh, 1 for 26 and Matt 1 for 48 proved to be an all round team effort to win us the game.
A good close game but Goldsithney secured 20 points St Just 7 points"

Goldsithney 2nd 11 v Beacon 3rd 11
Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bowl
Beacon 223-6 beat Goldsithney 135-8 by 88 runs.
Beacon 19 points Goldsithney 6 points.

Unfortunately the second eleven were unable to continue their excellent form losing to a Beacon side with one innings for the visitors proving to be the decisive one that of 79 by David Wells. Goldsithney's bowlers stuck to their task well picking up wickets and giving everything. In reply a good partnership between Bryan Palmer 55 and Jack Ralph 37 gave hope of an excellent victory. Sadly it was not to be however and the innings fell away after their dismissals but with recent wins under their belts and some excellent cricketers in the side confidence should still be high for the next fixture.
Stephen Nicholson's thoughts on the game
"We won the toss and elected to bowl first, unfortunately we took to the field with only 8 players due to the unavoidable late arrival of a couple of players and then proceeded to be hit for 20 odd runs in the first 3 overs.Restored to 10 players things got a little better in taking 6 wkts in the visitors score of 223.The real damage was done by a big hitting Beacon batsman who scored a quick fire 70 and in the process "losing" 6 match balls in the adjacent gardens!Sadly we dropped 5 catches......my personal apologies to the bowlers for being responsibly for three of them!!
Our reply looked good at one stage with Bryan Palmer hitting 55 and Jack Ralph 37 but in an attempt to"up the tempo"we lost quick wickets to a couple of run-outs and good catches by the visitors and ended on 136 all out"

A mixed start to the season.

St. Buryan 1st 11 v Goldsithney 1st 11
Venue : St. Buryan
Date: Saturday 27th April 2013.
Toss: St. Buryan won the toss and elected to field.
St. Buryan 228- 2 beat Goldsithney 227-4.
Points St. Buryan 17 Goldsithney 6

The curse of the early season struggles to field a full side struck the first team on the seasons curtain raiser as for various reasons only seven men were able to take to the field to represent the side, this is a problem which affects many clubs in the early stages of the season and we are confident as the season progresses we will be able to field full strength sides on a far more regular basis.
St. Buryan having won the toss and elected to field, would not of expected to of had such a difficult day in the field. In Francis Pellow however, the club has one of the finest batsmen in the division and he was at his destructive best finishing on 111 not out and was supported brilliantly by Albert Pellow (54). Contributions from Treve Kitchen (9), Leon Pellow (21) and Sid Lawrence (14 n.o) meant a very competitive total of 227-4 was completed from  Goldsithneys allotted 48 overs.
Defending any total with just five out fielders would prove extremely difficult however and despite the best efforts of the Goldsithney bowlers St.Buryan would pass the target in the 36th over for the loss of two wickets one falling victim to Sid Lawrence (1- 59) and the other a run out. The spirit shown by the side however showed that this club has the potential to be a serious promotion contender in this division also and more of the same guts and determination was to be shown in the first 11s next match.

Goldsithney 2nd 11 v Paul 3rds
Venue: Goldsithney
Date: Saturday 27th April 2013
Toss: Paul won the toss and elected to bat.
Paul 118 -5 beat Goldsithney 97-9 by 21 runs.
Points Goldsithney 2nds 4 points Paul 3rds 16 points.

Here are second 11 skipper Steve Nicholson's thoughts on the game.

"Paul batted first and found runs hard to come by on a damp and turning wicket,Steve N led the way with 10 overs for 14 runs and wickets went to Colin P(2),Jack R(2)and Dan O(1)with 2 stumpings from Steve P however we missed at least 6 catches and conceded more than a dozen extras
Runs were equally hard to come by in our innings against some accurate bowling and a disastrous middle order collapse saw us struggle to 97-9 in the 40 overs
This was a match we could and perhaps should have won but the old saying "catches win matches" proved to be correct on the day!
Many thanks to Colin P for umpiring;Neville B for scoring and Liz for the excellent teas"

Signs of promise certainly for the team moving forward and as Steve says if chances can be taken a little more clinically, the first win of the season will surely not be long in coming!

Saturday 4th May 2013.
No cricket this weekend as the first elevens game was cancelled due to a wet wicket while the seconds had  a bye scheduled for this weekend.

Saturday 11th May 2013.
Goldsithney 1st 11 v Porthleven 1st 11.
Venue: Goldsithney.
Toss: Goldsithney won the toss and elected to bat.
Goldsithney 235-2 beat Porthleven 214-7 by 21 points.
Points Goldsithney 18 Porthleven 6

This perormance and result hopefully will prove the catalyst for the team to go on a run of good results such was the commitment of the whole side while a couple of standout batting performances going a long way to deciding the overall outcome of the match. We knew that Porthleven relegated last season from Division 3 would be tough opposition and having won the toss and elected to bat, the scene was set for a quite outstanding pair of batting performances.
After some quiet early exchanges in the opening overs with Porthlevens opening bowlers bowling with accuracy and pace meant setting a solid platform with minimal damage along the way was the aim of the game initially. And that was what Treve Kitchen and Albert Pellow did before Albert was dismissed for 7 with the score on 19.  With Francis Pellow walking to the crease to join Treve Kitchen it was no exaggeration to say two of the finest batsmen in the league were now the challenge the Porthleven bowlers had to face, cue surely an early contender for one of the outstanding partnerships of the season. The natural attacking instincts of Francis soon took over as he took the attack to the bowlers while Treve supported brilliantly while also picking of any deliveries even fractionally off line. The run rate steadily increased and Francis was soon to 50 with some huge hits over the boundary for maximums. Treve soon followed him to milestone and as the run rate increased further, so did the entertainment with the ball dispatched to all parts of the ground and sometimes out of the ground. As the onslaught continued the team became aware of another approaching milestone for Francis and gave him the loud applause he fully deserved on reaching his second consecutive century. It was a special innings and wonderfully entertaining to watch as to be able to hit  a ball so cleanly so consistently is  a skill not many cricketers posses. When Treve was finally dismissed for an outstanding 68, the partnership had reached 190 and the score 209-2. Some useful late hitsrom Giles Lawrence ( 17 n.o) helped to boost the score up to an excellent 235-2. The star of the show was Francis however who finished 127 not out off just 124 balls.
No game is ever won at half time however and we were all fully aware that Porthleven were not about to go out without a very big fight. A solid start from the opening bowlers Matt Lawrence and George Wykes ensured the run rate did not escalate and it was Matt who was soon to provide the early breakthrough with a cracking delivery with the score on just 10. The  pressure continued to mount and when Sid Lawrence replaced Matt Lawrence and soon removed Porthlevens remaining opening batsmen with the score on 42, Goldsithney looked in charge of the game. Portlevens number 4 Aiden Botha had other ideas however and he set about producing his own outstanding batting performance with some superb stroke play and when a partnership worth 97 was constructed with Paul Cornbellack the balance of power in the game started to change and all the bowlers chipped in and bowled very well just to ensure the run rate was kept under control. The partnership was broken by Giles Lawrence excellent through out, who enticed a false shot from Cornbellack with the catch taken by George Wykes to dismiss him for 56. The game was turn decisively in our favour soon after with Giles again in the thick of the action producing an outstanding throw to run out Botha for 82 while attempting a second run and with his departure it was clear Porthleven felt their chances of winning the game were departing with him. The run rate continued to escalate and with Sid finishing the pick of the bowlers with 3-48 well supported by all the other bowlers, a less nerve racking finish than what had initially been threatened was ensured.
If we continue to perform to those levels as well as improving other areas this side has the potential to achieve a very successful season, lets hope we can carry the good form onwards!

Sunday 12th May 2013
The second elevens hopes of completing a double for the club over the weekend were ruined by the rain as heavy and persistent rain meant not a ball could be bowled. They face Perranarworthal at home this Saturday a dangerous side and your support would be much appreciated to help them achieve a win to lift them further up the table. The first 11 face a difficult trip to Perranporth and any travelling support you can give would certainly give them a real boost as they look to follow up last weekends excellent result.

That's all for now see you pitch side,
Goldsithney Cricket Club.

Hello and welcome to the official blog of Goldsithney Cricket Club. Over the course of the season this blog will keep you up to date with the highs and lows of running and representing our village side. With full match reports from both our first and second eleven games as well as providing an insight into the tireless work behind the scenes of some dedicated people without whom this club would not be able to function. We also hope to give an insight into the light hearted moments which may happen at any moment in this great club!

A little about us.
Goldsithney Cricket Club has two sides one in division 4 west and one in division 7 west. The club has been going through a transitional phase over the last few years and the first eleven are beginning to climb towards the former  heights the club once reached having last season achieved promotion from division 5 while the second eleven under experienced leadership have progressed hugely in the last couple of years since the side was re-established. This is great to see especially as many members of the side before the joining the club had played little or no cricket at all previously. Just goes to show what determination and hard work can achieve!
Our ground is one of the nicest around and is popular with visiting teams who often comment on how much they like it. When the sun is out we attract a reasonable amount of support although the more the better! The appreciation for those who support us regularly is huge. With the right weather the outfield is often like lightning which can make for some high scoring games great for entertainment, not so great for bowlers! Albert Pellow works tirelessly to ensure we have excellent cricket wickets and those who know him and even some who don’t recognise just how much the club means to him his commitment is invaluable to the running of the club. It should also be said that sadly the club lost another great clubman at the end of last season with the sad passing of Murray Robertson. Murray loved the club and showed this with his tireless enthusiasm which meant he umpired, scored and played at every oppurtunity a much liked and allround great man, there is no doubt that Murray will be sorely missed with a large void to be filled at the club.
The feeling of togetherness in the village is strong and this is reinforced on match days once the game has finished with a visit to one of the village pubs (as there are two  a side visits each pub on alternative weeks). It is always nice to unwind after a game especially after a tense finish and the key points of the game are often analysed over a beer or two, sometimes these key points start to become exaggerated in direct correlation with the amount of alcohol consumed!
As is inevitable with the close season unfortunately the club has lost a couple of well liked players. Mike Burt who has been invaluable for us with both ball and bat in hand over the last couple of years none more so than last year in our promotion campaign, has been offered the chance to progress his cricket at division 1 Penzance Cricket Club, everyone at Goldsithney thanks him for his efforts and wishes him all the best for the future. Secondly Mishka McCreedy who I believe has represented the club since the age of 13 has moved away up country and will subsequently be representing a side closer to him. Once again we thank him for efforts over a long period of time and wish him all the best for the future also. With every cloud there is a silver lining however and the club is delighted to welcome back Giles Lawrence who will be a fantastic addition to our side welcome back Giles!
Well that’s it for an introduction we have a practice scheduled for tomorrow at 5:30 so everyone welcome with the seasons start less than two weeks away. We can make no guarantees about the results we will achieve, but  what we can say is that every player who steps onto the pitch gives everything they have for the cause which is all that can be expected.
Until next time goodbye and hopefully see you pitch side,
Goldsithney Cricket Club.
Another wicket for Goldsithney ! plenty more this season on the cards!
